Reassurance

eassurance Contact offers regularly scheduled calls to elderly, handicapped or homebound people who have limited contact with the outside world. A trained Contact volunteer takes a few minutes to check on the client¹s well-being and give assurance that someone cares. In some cases, a Contact volunteer may be the only person a Reassurance Contact client talks to for days at a time. Reassurance can mean a lot.

Contact Reassurance volunteers make calls to the homebound and elderly who live alone, providing them with companionship and security of at least one contact daily. These calls reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, and can extend independent living for the elderly. Telephone friendships often develop between volunteer and client, with each sharing his or her feelings and daily experiences.

The Reassurance volunteer provides crucial support including:

  • Friendship for a 92-year old man who has outlived his peers.
  • Comfort to an 87-year old woman who fears a fall or sudden illness.
  • Companionship on holidays, when there is no one else to call.

This program can delay or even prevent institutionalization, allowing clients to stay in the familiar environment of their home.

Short-term service can be arranged when a family goes on vacation and leaves a loved one home alone; a person returns home from the hospital or during a period of recuperation.

Reassurance callers are volunteers who wish to reach out to a senior adult to assure his or her well-being. They are specially trained and will send help if the senior adult does not answer the call.
